You may not
know this about
Mom but
about 30 years
ago she got
deep exposure
to active rabies.
Not from a bat....
Not from a skunk....
but from a beautiful
loving horse....
(One of Mom's
saddest memories
from the
veterinary world.)
Her and 2 vets
had to have
the rabies vaccine
series.
1 big shot
in her butt
and then 8
other shots
over the next weeks.
They all had
something weird
happen to their
body chemistry.
Like one vet kept
passing out-even
in surgery so
Mom had to sew
critters back together
sometimes to
finish and he
never got better
so he had to
quit surgery.
(Mom said
what a waste
cuz he was a
brilliant surgeon.)
The other vet
had some
issues with his
digestion system
and food allergies.
(he ended up having
to sell his practice)
Mom got to be
allergic to some
weird mixes like
evergreen trees...
rosemary....
fish....
AND shellfish.
(REALLY?? HUH, CUZ
IT'S USUALLY
NOT BOTH)
We're guessing
our dreams of
snitching yummy
fish from the
plate will
never happen here...
WE'RE SO SAD.
But Mom said
it could have
been worse-
she could've
DIED
so
BUCK UP KIDS!
(How's that for
Catholic guilt??)
PURRRfect
now we'll have
to make up
with her
BEFORE
dinner.

Oh your mom is quite a woman, to have had to deal with all that, and still love animals. I think if I were you, I'd curl up and be extra nice today.

I never knew horses got rabies. I've always heard that the series of rabies treatment was so painful but didn't know there were such bad side effects. Probably very good that you two don't venture out to play.
ReplyDeleteThat is interesting about your mother. My own mother went to rescue herYorkie from a racoon in broad daylight. The racoon attacked her as well as her doggie. She had to have the rabies series. She said only the last shot was painful. She has never had any side effects from the shots that she knows of or I know of. But at the same time my mom is one tough lady. She has had 12 surgies in 7 years and is now 86. She has these major surgeries like they are nothing. Wondering if she and the others were in the stage of actually getting the rabies. My Mom had injuries that could not be closed with sutures.
